I have had a needle and thread in my hand for as long as I can remember. As a child I was quite accustomed to seeing my Mum sewing both clothes for all the family and home furnishing items. I would spend many hours copying with odds and ends of fabric and thread. I only played with dolls so that I could make them new clothes to wear. Once at secondary school level I was making clothes for myself quite regularly and knew that I wanted to become a textiles teacher. I took both O and A levels in Fabric and Dress and then went on to study for my teaching Degree.
I am currently employed on a part time basis as an adult education tutor, teaching mostly textiles from sewing machine skills to pattern cutting, to using crafts to improve mental well-being. I bring a range of experiences and learning to all my teaching roles. I taught in secondary schools for nine years both as a classroom Teacher and as a Head of Department. I have designed and made clothes for myself, family and commercially for private clients.
I spent five years altering bridal gowns for clients referred to me by two local wedding dress shops. This experience lead to a desire to design and make better bridal underwear than was readily available. I went back to University and studied for a Masters degree in Design Innovation. The course focused on the pattern cutting and grading of bras from core sizes to plus sizes and specialised in bespoke making.
After relocating to Dorset, I came into teaching, this time working exclusively with adults. I really enjoy helping others to appreciate sewing as much as I do, which is why I love teaching. I have my own passion for learning and take every opportunity to expand my own knowledge and practical experiences which, in turn, enriches my teaching.
I offer you the opening to partake in evening classes, or one off specialist workshops. Full details on workshop types can be found on the HOME link on the top menu.
